Reinstalling and updating

How to install a new version, what gets erased and how to run the first setup again.

Alpha

This documentation covers vGPU OS 0.1.2, in alpha. Screens and commands may change between versions; to see the installed version, use vgpu-os version.

There is no in-place update

vGPU OS 0.1.2 has no system update mechanism. A new version is installed from the USB drive, the same way as the first one — and the installation erases the disk.

Caution

The VMs live on the same disk as the system. Reinstalling vGPU OS erases all VMs. Beforehand, back up anything important from inside macOS (for example, to an external disk or to the cloud).

Installing a new version

  1. Download the new ISO with the download button in the #vgpu-os channel.
  2. Write the USB drive and follow the Installation, choosing the same disk.
  3. The first setup runs again: drivers, OSX-REIMS, and Reims vGPU compilation.
  4. Create the VMs again in OSX-REIMS.

Rerunning only the first setup

If the problem is in the drivers or the preparation — for example, after changing the graphics card — there is no need to reinstall. Open a terminal (see Commands) and run:

sudo vgpu-os-firstboot --force

OSX-REIMS inside vGPU OS

Each ISO ships a version of OSX-REIMS prepared for vGPU OS (the +vgpuos suffix in the version). In 0.1.2 it is OSX-REIMS 0.4.1. A new version of OSX-REIMS reaches vGPU OS in a new ISO, published in the #vgpu-os channel.

Using the computer with another system again

Install the other system normally over the vGPU OS disk. There is nothing to uninstall first.

This is also how vGPU OS is removed when the membership ends, whether canceled or not renewed: from then on it may no longer be used (see License). The VMs live on the same disk and are erased with it; first copy elsewhere any files you want to keep.
